The First Workout

So, Friday January 28th around 2:30 pm Lyndsey talked me into this crazy idea, and by 10 am the next morning she had me on the track. (Guess she had to capitalize on her opportunity right?  Get me committed before I changed my mind?)

So there she was, like a good loyal friend, in my driveway picking me up at 10 am just like she said she would, taking me to the Lynden High School track.  That way we could workout at the same location but go our own pace.  (She is a much more advanced runner than me.)  I couldn't help but think that morning that I was either totally insane, or totally committed, or both.  I don't know if you remember what the weather was like on Saturday in Lynden, but it was pouring!  I was very relieved to be going to the track.  No one (or hopefully no one) would be around to witness what was about to occur!

When we got to the track I couldn't help but have flash-backs to Freshman P.E. when Ross and Turf would make us run THE MILE every Friday.  I was back to being my scared 14 year old self.  But, knowing I needed divine intervention, I came to the track prepared!  I was wearing my t-shirt from my Atlanta "Church on the Street" Mission Trip, complete with a bible verse on the back side.  (I figured I needed Jesus as close to me as possible that morning!)  Couldn't hurt right?!  :)

We started with walking two laps to warm up, and then I trugged along with my iPod, alternating 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking for about 25 minutes (I got this idea online from the Couch to 5K program).   All in all it went ok, except for the RAIN, and the COLD and the WIND. :)  Actually, it was kinda fun if I was honest.  The rain made me not worry about what my hair and makeup looked like before I left.   (Side note:  This is an area where I'm going to have to let go a little.  Lyndsey made fun of me recently for showering and doing my hair and makeup before we went for a walk.  What can I say?  I'm my mother's daughter!  You never know who you will see when you are out for a walk - especially in Lynden.)  :)

Anyway, afterwards we stretched, and then Lyndsey told me I should go home and do yoga or pilates or something.  WHAT?!  I signed up for running...now she wanted me to do that too!?!  Shara isn't bendy. However, as luck would have it I did have a pilates DVD I picked up for $3 at a garage sale about 5 years ago.  Watched it once!  Guess now was the time to dust it off.

When I got home I texted a few select family and friends and sent a picture of my soaking wet self and explained now I had to do pilates too.  One of them said they thought it was quite possible Lyndsey was trying to kill me! :)  That made me laugh.  Here area a couple pictures.  You can decide for yourself.

I must be making progress in my hair/makeup complex, otherwise I wouldn't post this picture.  Haven't you ever seen a runner before?  We all look this good! :)

Happy to still be standing...and smiling! (And YES, this is my wind-breaker from High School Fastpitch!)
So, like I said, I had a DVD, so I listened to Lyndsey and went home, changed out of my soaking wet clothes and did my 20 min. Windsor Pilates DVD.  I actually think it helped a lot.  I was sore the next day, but not like I expected to be.  So now I'm going to be a runner, and a wanna-be pilates instructor! :)

At the end of the morning I was glad to have it all behind me.  I faced my fear of my first workout!  However, I now had a new fear:  Spandex!!  I took one look at what Lyndsey was wearing Saturday and knew this wasn't going to end well for me.  What's a girl to do? I'm sure I'll have lots of blog posts to come about figuring out that dilemma.  Chaffing or embarassment? Which is the lesser evil?  Stay tuned!
